Part of the Solution...
Did you see the NY Times Magazine on Sunday?
It was the food issue - choc full of good stuff for folks who care about food. The cover had Jamie Oliver, a chef I respect and even follow on Twitter, with a nice headline about his involvement in helping America's most obese county's school lunch program. The article does a great job of the banter we have about Jaime - "he's sincere, but all over the place", and it is very thourough as well. Yet still something rubbed me the wrong way about this story. I am thrilled we are addressing school lunches. Thank you Alice Waters for bringing this discussion to the communal table. Both as a person in this field, and as a mother of a pre-schooler, it is personal, political and a business matter for me what our kids eat. So why does a man from across the pond get the glory? I feel a bit how America did when we cast Vivien Leigh as Scarlett...don't we have the right person RIGHT HERE to do the job? And isn't that a large part of the healthful discussion? Local, use less fuel, farm-to-table? He is doing good things, and I am happy about it. I am just wistful about pretending to rage against the machine while really being a part of it.
Anyway - enjoy the read...
