Did you see the NY Times Magazine on Sunday?


It was the food issue—choc full of good stuff for folks who care about food. The cover had Jamie Oliver, a chef I respect and even follow on Twitter, with a nice headline about his involvement in helping America's most obese county's school lunch program. The article does a great job of the banter we have about Jaime—"he's sincere, but all over the place", and it is very thorough as well. Yet still something rubbed me the wrong way about this story.

I am thrilled we are addressing school lunches. Thank you Alice Waters for bringing this discussion to the communal table. Both as a person in this field, and as a mother of a pre-schooler, it is personal, political and a business matter for me what our kids eat. So why does a man from across the pond get the glory? I feel a bit how America did when we cast Vivien Leigh as Scarlett...don't we have the right person RIGHT HERE to do the job? And isn't that a large part of the healthful discussion? Local, use less fuel, farm-to-table?

He is doing good things, and I am happy about it. I am just wistful about pretending to rage against the machine while really being a part of it. Anyway—"enjoy the read...
